Patagonia H2No® Performance Standard

Patagonia are the ultimate leaders in sustainability and environmentally friendly production methods, and their H2No® performance standard testing is no exception. Similarly to Gore-Tex, for a fabric to be H2No® approved, it has to pass rigorous tests to make sure it is breathable, waterproof and long-lasting; this involves a number of waterproofing tests, including one which can simulate years of wear, as well as field testing to work out any weaknesses in the product and ensure that it won’t let you down while you’re wearing it. So if you’re buying an H2No® approved product, you can be sure that it will last forever, keep you protected and has been made with the ultimate respect for the planet.

2.5 Layer H2NO

The 2.5-layer H2No fabric is similar to the 3-layer fabric, but instead, the knit lining is replaced by a protective top coat barrier, which makes it more lightweight and ideal for backcountry skiing and snowboarding and alpine climbing. This is because of the lightness of the fabric, as well as its breathability, and it’s also really easy to pack if you’re doing short, highly aerobic activities.

Ripstop

Ripstop is a fabric weaving technique often used in the shells and linings of technical clothing. The fabric (most commonly Nylon or polyester) is woven in a crosshatch pattern of stronger fibres at intervals to stop the fabric from tearing, and stop further tearing if it does. Ripstop makes fabric is really strong and was first used to make military equipment such as parachutes, but is now commonly used in lightweight shell jackets and made from finer fibres in order to make garments soft and light while remaining super-tough

DWR

The DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish has become almost ubiquitous in the outdoor industry, and the satisfying water beading it provides has become the hallmark of a beautiful jacket. It is not strictly waterproof but will provide protection on it’s own against a light shower; however it does wear off so needs to be topped up from time to time. The DWR stops water from soaking into the outer layer of waterproof fabrics like Gore-Tex meaning they remain breathable and light in even in heavy rain.

Eco Friendly

Right from the start, Patagonia has been at the forefront of environmentally friendly production, and are still one of the only companies in the world that offer a completely transparent supply chain to anyone who cares to look. They are constantly experimenting and developing new ways to bring us durable and sustainably produced clothing - recycled polyester, organic cotton, traceable down, responsibly sourced merino and undyed cashmere are all common materials in a Patagonia catalogue. As well as using the best materials and production methods for the planet, Patagonia also make sure every one of their employees is treated fairly, from the shop floor to factories all over the world. And they donate a percentage of their yearly profits to environmental initiatives and community projects across the world.
