Petzl GriGri 2
The Petzl GriGri 2 belay device is a classic, reliable and intuitive assisted braking belay tool for sports climbers. Offering that extra level of support to the belayer, the GriGri 2 is suitable for use during either top roping or leading. How does it work? Should the climber fall unexpectedly, the belayer holds the brake side of the rope, and the cam pivots and pinches the rope, increasing the braking action. Although the GriGri 2 does not take away the responsibility to belay safely, the GriGri 2 helps the belayer in more unexpected situations by offering that extra level of support. With an ergonomic, clean design and an easy to use patented handle for gentle descending, this is a reliable, sturdy and undoubtably essential piece of gear for your climbs.
A new version of the Petzl GriGri is now available. Check it out HERE.

Petzl GriGri 2 Key Features
Hand motions are the same as with classic belay systems: both hands on the rope. A fall is stopped by gripping the brake side of the rope with your hand.
Assisted braking: during fall arrest, the belayer holds the brake side of the rope, the cam pivots and pinches the rope, increasing the braking action until the rope stops sliding
The GRIGRI 2's design allows for excellent descent control. One hand holds the rope and the other uses the handle to unlock the cam. The patented handle design allows a very gradual release of the rope. Combined with the strong braking action of the cam, it gives a great feeling of security when lowering a partner or rappelling.
The GRIGRI 2 is compact and very light at 170 g
Built with a stainless steel friction plate and cam to ensure a long life for the product
For 8.9 to 11 mm single ropes (optimized for 9.4 mm to 10.3 mm ropes)

I purchased GriGri 2 as my first belay device in climbing. Regarding its quality, it characterised by a light material easily usable by any climber of different ages, especially for the younger ones. Its behaviour in new ropes is to the expected standards and its lever guarantees the control that anyone would prefer in “peacefull” descentings. Regarding the ascenting, following the appropriate technique which is not diffucult for beginners, GriGri 2 guarantees a controllable and timely rope movement according to the climber needs. Overall, Safe and Value for money, simply the best!
I am a beginner in climbing and today was my first time using a belay device. I learned to use it so quickly, and with the assisted braking my confidence with belaying (with a 91kg man) grew really fast. Very useful and reliable!
